KONI opens registration for new chairperson post

The Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) on Wednesday opened registration for candidates hoping to become KONI chairperson for the 2011-2015 period.

Candidates who meet selection criteria will compete for the post at KONI’s national consultative meeting in Mataram, scheduled to take place from December 1 to 3.

“The registration will be open from [Wednesday] until November 28, 2011,” selection committee secretary Arsyad Ahmadin said Wednesday in Jakarta, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Among the selection criteria, Arsyad said, each candidate must secure support from a minimum of 10 KONI members and should not be involved in any legal cases.

He added, however, former convicts could join the race.

“The law in our country deems every citizen having undergone their prison sentences are free citizens who have the same rights as other citizens,” Arsyad said.

KONI is currently chaired by Rita Subowo, who has led the organization since 2007.
