RI govt at core of Papua conflict: Expert

A- A A+

A scientist from the National Institute of Science (LIPI) says the deterioration of relations between Papua and the central government in Jakarta have dragged both parties into ongoing conflict situations.

“The Papuans feel the central government doesn’t pay them enough attention. This can be seen easily by looking at regional development,” Adriana Elizabeth from LIPI said Saturday as quoted
by tempointeraktif.com.

Another problem, she said, was the unresolved human rights violations in the province that often lead to dissatisfaction with the central government. Adriana said all of the problems had led to a great distrust between both parties.

“And up until now, we haven't found the will to hold the discussion properly.”

All the above findings were part of a LIPI study on Papua, she said.
