Jakarta plans new road restrictions based on vehicle age

Jakarta administration is mulling a draft regulation to limit the number of vehicles on the road in the capital based on the year the vehicles were produced, Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo says.

“We will soon have a regulation limiting vehicles’ operating [lifespan],” Fauzi said Sunday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

He added that the regulation was aimed at improving public safety and health since older vehicles created more pollution than newer ones.

Jakarta Transportation Agency chief Udar Pristono said the administration would initially focus on public transportation vehicles. In the future big buses would only have a 10-year operating lifespan, while public minivans and taxi vehicles would only be allowed to remain on the road for up to seven years, Udar said.
