President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered an investigation of the collapse of the Tenggarong Bridge over the Mahakam River in Kutai Kartanegara, East Kalimantan, on Saturday. At least four people were killed, three men and a baby, while 43 others were injured and 16 remain missing.
“The President has instructed immediate measures to investigate the incident in order to prevent incidents from recurring in the future,” Welfare Minister Agung Laksono said Sunday morning after inspecting the incident scene with Public Works Minister Djoko Kirmanto.
“The President has also asked for measures to rescue victims, which are being carried out, and he has asked that economic activities around the area not be disrupted due to the collapse of the bridge,” Agung said, as quoted by Antara.
Agung was speaking during a press conference following a meeting with Kutai Kartanegara Regent Rita Widyasari, East Kalimantan Police chief Insp. Gen. Bambang Widaryatmo and a number of other local officials on early Sunday morning.
Agung said that no conclusions had been reached thus far as to what had caused the bridge to collapse.
The Tenggarong Bridge, which connects Tenggarong and Tenggarong Seberang districts in Kutai Kartanegara, suddenly collapsed at 4.30 p.m. on Saturday.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the bridge was under repair at the time of the incident.
