Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) has urged East Kalimantan Police to check whether there was an element of sabotage in its investigation of the collapse of the Mahakam Bridge in Kutai Kertanegara regency.

“Police should not just focus on the possibility of technical errors made during the construction of the bridge construction, but also look at the possibility of sabotage to divert attention away from some issues,” IPW chairman Neta S Pane said Monday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Neta added that before the bridge collapsed East Kalimantan and Kutai Kertanegara had been hit by two local issues that had attracted international attention, including the alleged slaughter of orangutans at Malaysian-run oil palm plantation in Puan Cepak and a bombing issue in West Balikpapan.

The two issues, especially the former, had attracted the attention of the international public to East Kalimantan.

Neta added that IPW hoped the police could quickly expose the cause of the incident case so as to avoid public unrest.

He added that his organization hoped that National Police chief Gen. Timur Pradopo would send a special team to help East Kalimantan Police in its investigations, citing the "unprofessional" and "slow" work of the latter, especially in dealing with the orangutan and bombing cases.
