The Public Works Ministry established a Long Bridge Safety Commission to evaluate the condition of bridges throughout the archipelago.
Minister Djoko Kirmanto said the commission would be responsible for routine supervision of safety and security in all long bridges.
“In Suramadu for example there are many bolts that have gone missing. That is why we have to check to ensure its safety,” said Djoko.
Asked about the cause of the collapsed bridge in Kutai Kartanegara, Djoko said it would take more time to determine the cause. However after visiting the bridge he assumed the cause was the loss of overhead wire from the main cables.
“I don’t see any other problem, but let the investigation conclude,” said Djoko.
The 710-meter bridge caved in on Saturday around 4.30 p.m. local time, killing several people and injuring dozens of others.
