The Jakarta administration has invited residents to participate in maintaining environmental cleanliness in an effort to cope with floods.

“The local government will hold a ‘Bersih Ciliwung Sehari’ [Clean Up Ciliwung for a Day] program on Dec.31,” Ade, a Ciliwung resident, told The Jakarta Post over the phone on Wednesday.

She said that the local government was inviting all Ciliwung residents to clean up the Ciliwung River from upstream to downstream.

Ade said the campaign was a new government program. “There has never been a program like this,” she said.

She added that the government had previously never disseminated information related to flood prevention.

The Jakarta administration will deploy more than 7,000 officers to anticipate possible floods in the capital as the rainy season approached.(drs)
