Police have named another man, identified as An from Blackberry manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM), as a suspect in the recent Blackberry promotion that ended in mayhem.
“To date we have named four people as suspects. They are Tb and An from RIM, M from Pacific Place shopping mall and E from the event organizer,” South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Imam Sugianto said on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Baharuddin Djafar said An should have been capable of predicting that the promotion could lead to unrest and thus preventive measures should have been put in place.
“An should have been able to see that giving a 50 percent discount to the first 1,000 prospective buyers posed risks but no preventative actions were taken,” he said.
RIM organized a promotion on Friday last week, granting a 50 percent discount to the first 1,000 people purchasing the latest Blackberry smart phone. A scuffle broke out when people who turned out to purchase the product realized they would not get what they came for. Dozens of people fainted and a number of others were hospitalized with broken bones.
