Sukabumi
regency has been ranked second-highest in West Java in terms of human trafficking
cases, Sukabumi women and children empowerment unit chief Elis Nurbaeti said in
Sukabumi on Wednesday as quoted by Antara state news agency.
Elis
said her unit had handled 68 cases of violence against women and children over
the past year.
“Of
the 68 cases, 40 percent were human trafficking cases,” she said, citing that
the unit had handled 27 such cases.
Elis
said most of the victims had been trafficked to Malaysia and Batam and had been
promised big salaries there.
“Many
cases are still hidden because many victims are reluctant to open up,” she
said.
Elis
added that the unit had provided shelters for victims, which also function as
centers for complaints.
