House extends Century monitoring for a further year

The House of Representatives (DPR) announced on Thursday that it has extended the work period of the Bank Century bailout-case monitoring team by a year.

“All factions have agreed to extend the monitoring team’s task by a year,” House deputy speaker Taufik Kurniawan said in Jakarta, as quoted by tempo.co.

The monitoring team, whose current work period ends in mid-December, was formed by the House's Bank Century scandal special committee to watch over law enforcers’ handling of the case.

Taufik said that the Democratic Party faction initially opposed the extension of the monitoring team’s work period, but a number of other factions argued that an extension was necessary as the case had not been properly dealt with by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

He said that the House factions had decided to give the newly appointed KPK frontmen a chance to handle the case.

“We hope that the new KPK leaders are able to settle big cases, including the Century case,” he said.
