JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta District Court sentenced a Vietnamese national to one year in prison for a petty crime on Wednesday.
The panel of judges at the court found Chu Than Thu, 20, guilty of stealing clothes from Grand Indonesia shopping mall in Central Jakarta.
In the indictment, prosecutors accused Chu of stealing 17 items of women’s clothing worth Rp 3.6 million (US$300), on Aug. 16.
Chu snatched the items without paying and was caught soon after the mall’s security alarm went off. “Attendants at the mall told security guards about the incident and they later filed a report to the police,” presiding judge Gosen Butar Butar said when delivering the verdict.
The one year jail term is lighter than the 1.5-year sentence demanded by the prosecution.
