Floating market likely to disappear

The Banjarmasin Tourism Agency says that the activities in the floating market in East Kalimantan have been decreasing at a rapid rate, leaving many concerned that the famous market will likely close.
Agency head Noor Hasan said Friday that the local administration had tried its best to preserve the market, which has been one of Banjarmasin’s top tourist destinations.
Noor cited the rapid road development around the area as being a major contributing factor to the decrease in activity at the market, as residents can now shop in regular markets on land, and sellers can distribute their products to other types of markets.
He also blamed the crossing boat, which cuts through the area where the floating market is situated, for disrupting the market’s traders.
“Most sellers on the floating market are worried for their boats whenever a crossing boat passes the area. That is why selling on the floating market is no longer attractive,” he said.
Noor said the agency had urged the crossing boat operators not to operate in the area or the local market nearby in order to coexist with the floating market, Antara news agency reported.
