16 provinces at risk of flash floods in Dec, Jan
A forecast increase in rainfall in December and January will bring with it the threat of flash floods to 16 provinces in Indonesia, agency says.
Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Chairwoman Sri Woro B. Harijono said that Greater Jakarta was not at risk of flash floods because the projected rainfall for the capital was classified as normal.
“Rainfall is only one factor, the other factors are deforestation in upstream and watershed areas and sedimentation in rivers,” she said on Monday as quoted by Kompas.com.
The 16 provinces with at risk fo flooding in December 2011 are Aceh, North Sumatera, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatera, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Yogyakarta, Central Java, East Java, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, North Sulawesi and South Sulawesi.
Meanwhile, the 15 provinces forecast to be at risk from flooding in January are North Sumatera, Bengkulu, Lampung, Banten, West Java, Yogyakarta, Central Java, East Java, Jakarta, Bali, East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and South Kalimantan.
