Sodomy II: Anwar to get verdict on Jan. 9

A- A A+

The High Court will give its verdict on Jan 9 in the case of Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim who faces a charge of sodomizing his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan three years ago.

High Court judge Mohamad Zabidin Mohd Diah set the date after Anwar's lead counsel Karpal Singh and Solicitor-General II Mohamed Yusof Zainal Abiden, leading the prosecution team, concluded their submissions at the end of the defence case.

Anwar, 64, pleaded not guilty on Aug 7, 2008, of committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature against Mohd Saiful, 26, at Condominium Desa Damansara in Bukit Damansara here between 3:10 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on June 26, 2008.

He was charged under the Penal Code which carries a sentence of up to 20 years in jail and whipping, upon conviction.

This is the second sodomy charge faced by Anwar.

In 2000, he was charged with sodomizing driver Azizan Abu Bakar.

At the time, he was convicted and sentenced to nine years' jail by the High Court. However, four years later the Federal Court overturned the conviction and set aside the jail sentence.
