As part of its efforts to reduce traffic congestion in the capital, the Jakarta administration has proposed to increase parking fees next year.
Jakarta parking unit chief Enrico Vermy said the increases would vary based on types of vehicles.
For example, in category A, the parking fee for sedans would increase from Rp 1,000 (11 US cents) to
Rp 4,000 per hour.
Buses would face a parking fee increase from Rp 2,000 to Rp 6,000 per hour, while the official fee for motorcycle parking would increase from Rp 500 to Rp 2,000 per hour.
Your comments:
Traffic is a problem in every big city and jammed on a toll road is not a big problem; it’s a matter of travel time.
However, it is horrible to get jammed on non-toll roads.
We have to compete against motorcyclists who may innocently hit us every time, and the noise from their exhausts is damaging.

I don’t think this idea will work. The problem is that we don’t have sufficient and well maintained public transportation.
People keep going around the city in cars, because they are more comfortable using their private vehicles and they wonder why they have traffic jams all the time.
No matter what, the government should make better public transportation and increase the tax on buying vehicles, so people will be unwilling to buy more and more vehicles.

I do appreciate the government’s efforts. However, this won’t work well if the public transportation remains like it is.
What about increasing tax? I
can’t imagine how annoying the traffic is there!
I live in Malang, East Java, and they say that traffic in Jakarta is so much worse than here. I don’t think I could stand it. I don’t even want to visit Jakarta.

Traffic is a very difficult issue for our government.
Increasing fees, building highways or roads will not provide a progressive solution if they don’t do anything to decrease the number of vehicles.
Can you imagine one day if there were only roads on our maps? Or the traffic totally came to a standstill? Please pay serious attention to this.

The government seems desperate to tackle traffic issues. The following factors should be taken into account beforehand: First, fix the transportation system in the country.
Second, security in public areas must be maintained.
Third, the parking fees levied must be monitored and forwarded to the government. Illegal fee-levying is rampant.

No, build better public transportation before increasing parking tickets, oil prices, toll charges, taxes on vehicles. We’d see how many people would still use their vehicles.

What a stupid idea to tell the truth, even a price increase of 10 times wouldn’t be effective. Just fix the roads, traffic lights and clear the streets from street vendors, etc.
