Sixteen Indonesian fishermen reportedly trapped in Antarctica are fine, says the Foreign Ministry.
Their Russian fishing vessel hit an iceberg in Antarctica last week.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Michael Tene said on Monday that the ship’s crew reported the accident to and asked the New Zealand government for help on Friday.
“They’re in good condition right now. The Indonesian Embassy in Wellington has taken care of this case and is sending help for the fishermen,” he told The Jakarta Post.
New Zealand’s Rescue Coordinating Center is also helping to rescue the ship’s crew, Michael said.
He said he was monitoring the situation through the Indonesian Ambassador to New Zealand Agus Sriyono.
