The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) says the questioning of Nunun Nurbaeti will help indicate whether or not the graft suspect was really suffering from a case of dementia, as diagnosed by doctors.

“It has to be clear, so we will question her about the case first,” KPK spokesman Johan Budi said Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Doctors at the National Police hospital, where Nunun was treated, recently confirmed claims voiced by her family that she was suffering from dementia, a condition where a person experiences a declining ability to memorize and think.

Nunun was admitted to the MMC Hospital, before being transferred to the police hospital, last week as she almost fainted during questioning at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) headquarters.

After a week in the hospital, doctors have declared her fit to undergo further questioning and she has subsequently been returned to the Pondok Bambu penitentiary in East Jakarta.

The KPK has announced that it would resume Nunun’s questioning on Wednesday.

Johan said that should the results of questioning indicate that Nunun was suffering from memory loss, the anti-graft commission would still have to consult an independent party regarding the matter.

“We will wait for the results of the questioning. If she keeps on forgetting and is seems to be suffering from dementia, we will seek for a second opinion from an independent team of doctors,” he said.

Nunun, a suspect in a bribery case surrounding the election of a Bank Indonesia deputy governor in 2004, was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand, earlier this month after 10 months on the run as an Interpol fugitive.
