JAKARTA: The Jakarta administration has yet to begin work on demolishing a culvert in Pondok Labu, South Jakarta, that has caused months of inundation in a residential complex in the area.
City Public Works Agency deputy chief Novizal said Tuesday that the agency could not immediately begin the work concerning a number of residential houses located adjacent to the culvert.
“We are afraid that if we tear down the culvert, the houses will be damaged,” Novizal told The Jakarta Post.
The agency was trying to determine other possibilities to demolish the culvert without causing peripheral damage, he said.
Earlier this month, city secretary Fadjar Panjaitan promised that the demolition of the culvert, which was built by the marines and which narrowed the Krukut River, would begin Tuesday.
