Dozens of local tourists in Cilacap, Central Java, suffered burns caused by an explosion in a motor boat they were traveling in on Friday at around 10 a.m.

The incident occurred when KM Bangkit 01 was about to depart taking tourists who hoped to witness the Larung Sesaji procession (a series of ritual sea offerings) at Teluk Penyu Beach on Majeti Island, south of Nusakambangan Island.

About 18 people, including the skipper, suffered burns from the blast and were rushed to Santa Maria hospital in Cilacap, Central Java.

“I received information from my members that there was a ship that exploded near the Sentolo Kawat fish market. We immediately rescued them because the ship belongs to one of our members,” Sentolo Kawat fishermen’s group head Yugo Arjo Utomo said Friday as quoted by Antara news agency.

One of the victims, Dekan, said the boat’s engine growled loudly when it was first started but then the sound faded away.

“The engine suddenly roared again before it blew out,” he said. (drs)
