The North Sumatra regional office of the Law and Human Rights Ministry announced that no sentence remission would be granted for corruption convicts to coincide with the upcoming Christmas holiday this year.
Sentence remission would only be granted to 1,516 convicts in cases other than corruption. Some 1,754 inmates would receive parole, 54 inmates would receive “near freedom” leave and 1,384 would receive conditional leave.
Sentence remissions are granted every Independence Day and Christmas Day.
Spokesman for the regional office Sapawi said that inmates who would receive sentence reductions had served at least six months of their sentence and showed good behavior during their imprisonment, kompas.com reported on Saturday.
Data from the office shows that currently 15,656 people are incarcerated in North Sumatra penitentiary, 9,515 of them are convicts and the remaining 6,141 people are detainees.
