“We will propose the overpass construction plan to the municipal legislative council in the near future,” South Tangerang mayor Airin Rachmi Diany said on Friday.
Airin said that Jl. Raya Serpong, a main road linking South Tangerang with the Jakarta-Merak turnpike and Tangerang municipality had dozens of traffic-congestion spots so that it could no longer accommodate the increasing volume of vehicles.
“We've given up on tinkering with the traffic congestion problem, especially on Jl. Raya Serpong that accommodates 11,000 vehicles per hour,” she said.
According to Airin, traffic congestion on Jl. Raya Serpong is caused by several factors such as the increasing volume of vehicles of various types, U-Turns, illegal roadside parking, shopping centers and road users’ bad habits in ignoring traffic signs.
In addition to the overpass construction plans, the administration is currently also developing an engineering management concept to restructure the traffic which will be implemented in three phases.
