Council: 20 bylaws passed, 16 to go

JAKARTA: The City Council announced on Wednesday that it had issued 20 bylaws since the current members’ swearing-in in October 2009, with 16 more bylaws remaining until 2014.

Council speaker Ferrial Sofyan said that prioritized bylaw drafts included those on parking and public facilities.

“We expect to issue the two bylaws in 2012,” said Ferrial, who is a politician from the Democratic Party.

Among the bylaws the council has issued are those on regional fees, business permits, people with disabilities, and development planning and budgeting.

There are 94 members on the City Council for the 2009-2014 period comprising 25 reelected members and 69 new faces, who were sworn in on Aug. 25, 2009.

With 32 seats, the Democratic Party dominates the council, followed by the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) with 18 seats and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) with 11 seats.

Ten political parties hold seats on the council for the term.
