In a bid to prepare itself for the global economy, the Trade Ministry aims to boost its employees’ Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores to 600.
Trade minister Gita Wirjawan said that his ministry had targeted 1,000 out of 3,000 employees to get a TOEFL score higher than 600 this year.
To reach the target, the ministry will invite English teachers to teach officials at echelon II and lower positions before or after work hours.
“I applied such a program when I was at the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) and it was a success,” Gita, who was a BKPM chief, said on Monday in Jakarta as quoted by kompas.com.
Gita added that 258 BKPM employees out of 580 had scored higher
than 600 in TOEFL last year.
The effort is part of the ministry’s bureaucratic reforms. The ministry also plans to boost the number of its employees with master’s and doctoral degrees to 1,500. (swd)
