“In 2010, we recorded 736 traffic accidents but the figure increased by 23 percent to 788 in 2011 with 130 people killed on roads,” Tangerang traffic police chief Comr. Firman Dharmansyah said Monday.

He said 716 of the cases had ended up in court..

Tangerang Police oversee the Tangerang regency and the newly created South Tangerang municipality.

According to Firman, road accidents had caused at least Rp 1.6 billion in losses because 1,222 vehicles involved in the traffic accidents were written off.

He said that the main causes of traffic accidents were road users’ ignorance and their disregard of traffic signs.

“Almost all of the traffic accidents here began from traffic violations and occurred because the victims did it deliberately, lacked knowledge or they may have disregarded the prevailing regulations,” he said, adding that having a driver’s license was very important.

Firman called on drivers and motorcyclists to pay attention to the condition of their vehicles, which also contributed to traffic accidents.
