Prosecutors demanded panel of judges at the Corruption Court to declare former South Nias Regent Fuhuwusa Laia guilty of bribing a General Election Commission (KPU) member and sentenced him to four years jail term and Rp 150 million (US$16.436) in fine.

According to prosecutors, Fuhuwusa had proven handing over Rp 99.9 million of bribe money to a KPU member Saut Hamonangan Sirait to help legalizing his candidacy at 2011 South Nias election.

Fuhusuwa also asked Saut to annul the dismissal of four South Nias KPU members by North Sumatra KPU.

The bribe money was handed over on Oct. 3, 2010 while Fuhuwusa was still in office as the South Nias Regent for 2006-2011.

The money was put in a small flower-motive bag, which Fuhuwusa said consisting of cookies.

“When Saut checked the bag, it consisted of money. He directly reported it to the Corruption Eradication Commission,” said one of the prosecutors Kadek as quoted by kompas.com.

The trial was adjourned until next week to hear Fuhuwusa’s pleading.(iwa)
