Some 1,200 civil servants at the Trade Ministry are going to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination on Jan. 10-12.
Earlier this week, Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan said his ministry was targeting 1,000 out of 3,000 employees to obtain a TOEFL score above 600 this year.
The ministry will provide English courses for a year to employees who score lower than 600.
The ministry has allocated Rp 6 billion (US$660,000), or Rp 500,000 per employee, for the training program.
Gita stressed that foreign language skills were important in facing a globalized economy.
“Foreign languages, including English, Arabic, French and Mandarin are important. We will start with English,” Gita said as quoted by kompas.com on Thursday. (swd)
