Strong winds, heavy rain bring down trees, billboards in Jakarta

Heavy rain coupled with strong winds pounding Jakarta on Thursday afternoon brought down a number of trees and billboards in many areas across the city.

Heavy traffic congestion inevitably followed on most streets and intersections.

The Jakarta Police Traffic Management Center (TMC) reported toppled trees in many areas, including those in front of the Wisma BSG building on Jl. Abdul Muis, which fell over two cars and a motorcycle.

TMC reported uprooted trees in front of the Meruya police post and on Jl. Tomang Raya in West Jakarta, on Jl Jend. Sudirman and in front of SMU 24 high school in Senayan, Central Jakarta, had partly blocked the roads.

Trees in Mangga Besar and on Jl. Palmerah Barat in West Jakarta fell on electricity poles.

The strong winds also peeled away advertisement billboards along the Kebon Jeruk toll road, across the Tomang toll gate and near the Grogol toll gate, with one falling on a truck and another on a resident’s house. (swd)
