JAKARTA: The General Elections Commission (KPU) has been seen as an employment opportunity attracting unemployed people trying their luck registering for a position with the state institution.

Ramlan Surbakti, a member of the selection team, confirmed on Wednesday that unemployed people were among those registering for KPU membership. As of Wednesday, the selection team had received 137 applicants. Apart from the unemployed, the applicants also came from different professions such as businesspeople, lecturers, civil servants and retired officers. Perhaps surprisingly so far only one applicant is known to have political affiliations.

“We have not received applicants from political parties yet. But we know one applicant has a political affiliation,” said Ramlan as quoted by Antara.

Recruitment for the KPU and the Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) has been open since Dec. 16, 2011. Registration will close on Friday, Jan. 6. Ramlan predicted more applicants would come to his office as the deadline approached.
