AKARTA: Investigators from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) questioned former lawmaker Agus Condro Prayitno on Friday to help the commission find the mastermind behind the Bank Indonesia vote-buying scandal.
Agus, who has just served 15 months in prison for his role in the case, said he believed the KPK had found significant clues as to the identity of the person responsible for the case.
Agus was among 26 politicians who were found guilty of receiving traveler’s checks totaling Rp 24 billion (US$2.64 million) from Nunun, the wife of former National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Adang Daradjatun, as bribes to swing the vote for Miranda Goeltom during the Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor selection in 2004.
Agus, the first person uncovered in the illicit practices, however, said that both Nunun and Miranda were not key players in the case.
“Miranda’s total income as the senior deputy governor during her five-year tenure would only be about Rp 15 billion. Why would she be willing to spend Rp 24 billion for the bribe? It would be a total loss for her,” Agus said as quoted as kompas.com.
He said he suspected there was a benefactor, who had conspired with other investors, wishing to place their people in strategic positions in the central bank to safeguard their businesses.
When asked to clarify who the benefactor and investors were, Agus said, “KPK investigators know.”
Nunun, who was a go-between in the case, was arrested in Bangkok, Thailand, in December, 2011.
