Bohemian rhapsody

A- A A+

Fashion designer cum TV personality Ivan Gunawan and former model-turns-designer Ina Thomas shared stage to flaunt boho style.

The two fashion designers had different takes on interpreting bohemian style. Through his first self-titled line, Ivan’s collection was a mix of hippie and gypsy, commonly known for wearing colorful clothes with large printed motifs, maxi dresses and large accessories.

The tribe has inspired artists and writers like Henri Murger, whose novel was made into an opera called La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini. The opera portrayed bohemians living in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the 19th century.

Ivan played with color blocking, pairing brocade with organdy in the form of a number of super tight pencil skirts, applying striking yet dramatic bulky bows twisted on the bodice.

He mixed different motifs, such as flora, fauna, polka dot and stripes, juxtaposing one pattern with another, evoking cheerfulness and dynamism effects.

In the second sequence, Ivan displayed loose-fitting items, from flounce mini and floaty maxi dresses to palazzo pants, playing with layering and tiering.

The parade had a sense that it’s about time to say goodbye to skinny pants and say hello to wide-leg bottoms.

For the palazzo display, Ivan kept the tops simple, choosing feminine blouson tucked in or belted up and paired with chunky heeled shoes, making an elegant silhouette while in the same time reviving the 1970s vibe when such a style was a hit.

For a more glamorous evening event, Ivan went classic as he opted for black on voluminous yet tiered dresses with ruffles and frills. The frilly stoles, the curly messy hairdo and headbands enhanced the bohemian look.

Ivan started his career in the fashion industry as a design assistant to Adjie Notonegoro, who is his uncle, before deciding to establish his own label, Ivan Gunawan, in 2004, followed by a Muslim wear line named Miss to Mom (2008), bridal line Love (2009) and ready-to-wear clothing IG Ivan Gunawan (2010).

He is often dubbed “a celebrity darling” for being preferred by many Indonesian public figures.

Ina Thomas, who first launched her clothing line “Ina Thomas” in 2009, grasped a different concept by blending boho with gothic in a collection themed The Goth*Des, resulting in a sensuous yet dark atmosphere on the runway.

The models all appeared with long yet super-straight hair and smokey-eyed makeup. While Ivan exposed neon colors, Ina embraced dark ambiance, which pretty much reflected the gothic feel.

Earthy shades such as dark brown and caramel also came up on the stage, with a splash of floral accentuation.

Her collection was dominated with flowing floor boho dresses – either strappy, empire silhouette, one-shoulder and halter, adorned with floral and abstract motifs.

Palazzo trouser also marched on the runway, paired with printed loose blouses, while long slim dresses appeared with embellishment and baroque ornaments.

Some of the dresses – in raw silk, chiffon, semi organdy and taffeta – were slit as high as the models’ thighs or tiered.

Ina, also known as the wife of actor Jeremy Thomas, also showed some legs in the form of a micro skirt with jacket and a pencil skirt with single-shoulder printed top.

The collection was adorned with golden yet chunky accessories like huge bangles, layer-beaded bracelets, layered stony necklaces, big and long earrings, stone-studded rings and golden leafy headbands.
