Makers of Esemka cars hope
to be awarded scholarships

The Klaten vocational senior high school students who assembled the Esemka sports utility car say they would be keen on any scholarships offered to them for their achievement.
“I want to study automotive engineering at the ITB (Bandung Institute of Technology),” said 17-year-old Rimbawan Setiadi on Sunday, as quoted by tempo.co.
He added that he would also like to continue his studies in a country renowned for its achievements in the field of automotive [design and manufacturing], such as Germany.
“I will then share the knowledge gained with other students in Indonesia,” he said.
Another maker of the Esemka car, Yunior Oki, said he dreamed of pursuing higher education before searching for jobs.
“When I’m really good in the automotive field, then I’ll start working,” he said.
He said so far, however, neither he nor his fellow schoolmates who crafted the Esemka car had been offered any scholarships whatsoever.
The car, which is being mass produced by Kiat Motors, has attracted the attention of several high-ranking government officials. Some, such as Surakarta Mayor Joko Widodo and his deputy, have chosen the Kiat Esemka as their official vehicles.
Other state officials, such as House of Representatives speaker and People’s Consultative Assembly speaker Hidayat Nur Wahid has called for appreciation and support for the makers of the car through the provision of scholarships.
Hidayat’s Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) recently publicly announced that they will present awards not only to the students who assembled the car, but also to the school and teachers involved. (awd)
