Scotland's
government says British Prime Minister David Cameron is attempting to pressure
the country into an early vote on its long promised independence referendum.
Nicola Sturgeon, Deputy First Minister of Scotland's semiautonomous Parliament, told BBC
radio Monday that Cameron was meddling in the hope of sinking the country's bid
to split from England.
Scotland's separatist Scottish National Party government hopes to hold a
vote in 2014, the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn - a famous
Scottish military victory over England.
Cameron, who opposes the move, says
uncertainty over Scotland's
status is damaging and should be quickly resolved.
Opinion polls show support in Scotland rising
for full independence. (nvn)
