Tangerang residents complain over poor street lighting

Tangerang municipality residents have long complained about poor street lighting on many main roads across the municipality.

“We live in a city, but at night we feel like we are living in a remote village because many street lights do not function properly,” Rifky, a resident of Tajur subdistrict, Cileduk, told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

He said there was considerable concern that the absence of light could later lead to street crime, as such conditions often encourage people with ill intentions.

Another resident, Sutoto, had also complained over the lack of street lights along the main road heading to his housing complex.

“I don’t understand why the administration has ignored this situation,” he said, adding that residents pay the monthly street light tax and therefore deserve better service.

In response, local councilor Hidayat said that the poor street lighting was a result of the municipal administration allocating less funds, only around Rp 600 million (US$66,000) from the annual budget, for street lighting maintenance.
