Endin Soefihara, a former lawmaker who has served jail time for accepting to swing votes for Miranda Goeltom as Bank Indonesia’s senior deputy governor in 2004, says he does not know who funded the bribery campaign.
“I was asked whether I knew about the checks. I told them I did not know where the checks came from, or the prime benefactor,” said Endin, the former lawmaker from the United Development Party (PPP) after his four-hour questioning session at the antigraft body headquarters on Tuesday.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has sent at dozens of those lawmakers to jail, yet it has not named any of the bribe payers or the mastermind behind the bribery scheme.
As many as 480 traveler’s checks, worth Rp 24 billion in total, were allegedly distributed by high-profile businesswoman Nunun Nurbaeti to at least 33 House members overseeing finance affairs, right after the fit and proper test of three candidates for the post, to help Miranda win the position.(dic)
