JAKARTA: A survey by the Indonesian Consumer Protection Foundation (YLKI) in December 2011 revealed that most cigarette consumers were all for a stern implementation of the No-Smoking Zone rule in hotels and restaurants, the foundation said.

“The majority agree that a sanction be imposed on those in violation of the No-Smoking Zone rule,” YLKI tobacco advocacy chief Tulus Abadi said on Wednesday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

He said that 76 percent of smokers agreed to the idea of a sanction for smokers that breached the rule in hotels, while 24 percent disagreed.

As many as 55 percent of consumers said that the sanction should be in the form of Rp 250,000 to Rp 500,000 fine, while 27 percent thought that the fine should be more than Rp 1 million. Only 18 percent of consumers, however, said that the fine should be no more than Rp 500,000.

As for the implementation of the rule in restaurants, more than half of consumers said that the fine for violating the rule should be between Rp 100,000 and Rp 300,000, Tulus said.
