Top NII activist gets 5 years

A- A A+

A panel of judges at the Semarang District Court found Totok Dwi Hananto, alias Nizaz Sidiq, guilty of abetting attempted treason by the Indonesian Islamic State (NII) movement.

“Totok is proven guilty of attempted treason in the hope of toppling the legitimate government,” presiding judge Zainuri said Thursday as quoted by tempo.co.

Totok was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, far fewer than 15-year jail term demanded by the prosecutors.

“I will appeal,” said Totok.

He said he never deposited money to support the alleged treason movement of Panji Gumilang, leader of the Al Zaytun Islamic school.

He said all the money he deposited with the school was fees paid by parents of students studying at the school.

Other NII activists convicted in Central Java in a similar case are Supandi and Nur Basuki, who each got three years’ imprisonment, and Mardiyanto who was handed a two-year prison term. (iwa)
