UPANG: Living alongside a steam-powered electricity (PLTU) plant does not appear to be a guarantee for some local people in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, of receiving electricity.
Around 50 families at Kuanheun village, West Kupang district, are still deprived of electricity despite the fact that they live next to the Bolok industrial area where the Bolok PLTU has been established.
According to village head Semin R. Polin, this situation has made the villagers feel isolated, the more so as they have virtually no access to information. The lack of power is also blamed for the poor academic performance among the village’s schoolchildren.
“In fact, our village borders the Bolok PLTU. It’s just two kilometers away from our settlement area,” he said, adding that neighboring villages that are also deprived of electricity include Taunesu, Kuantubu and Oefo.
Paul Bolla, an official with state electricity company PLN in charge of local distribution, said the company would send a team to those villages for a survey.
