SEMARANG: A policewoman received a three-month jail sentence for defamation in Semarang on Thursday.

Chief Brig. Tatik Suryaningsih, a member of East Java Traffic Police Unit, was found guilty of defaming Anie Widyastuti, a businesswoman and member of the Democratic Party (PD) central board.

The verdict was read out by judge Kisworo at Semarang Court on Thursday.

Tatik was sued by Anie as a result of a letter written by the police officer complaining about domestic violence and addressed to the then National Police chief, Bambang Hendarso Danuri, on July 29, 2009.

In her letter, Tatik also said that her husband Adj. Comr. Supriyanto was involved in an affair with Anie.

Anie fought back by reporting Tatik’s accusation to the Central Java Police office before bringing the case to court.

The defendant broke down in tears upon hearing the verdict, her lawyer said she would appeal. Around 20 women attended the court session with their mouths taped with pieces of paper on which was written, “Justice for Women”. They wore black clothes in support of Tatik.
