Tremors jolt Manggarai and Sangihe Islands

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale rocked Manggarai Barat, East Nusa Tenggara on Saturday morning, followed by another 5.7 quake that hit Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi later in the morning.

The Manggarai Barat quake took place at 3:32 a.m. with its epicenter located 124 kilometers in the southwest of the regency and centered in the ocean floor.

"The earthquake did not trigger the tsunami alert, but many residents felt the shock for three seconds," Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.

The agency was collecting data on reports of damage or casualties, Sutopo added.

Meanwhile, the Sangihe quake occurred at 5:50 a.m.. Its epicenter was located in the northwest of the Sangihe Islands in the depth of 10 kilometers beneath the sea floor.

According to the agency, the quake was mildly felt by the resident.

No damage or casualties were reported.
