Eviction looming for ‘squatters’ in Army houses

The Wirabuana VII district military command will call on squatters living in 44 official Army houses in Makassar, South Sulawesi, to leave.

A team established by the district military command to control its official houses, issued a letter on Jan. 19 inviting the residents to attend a session designed to disseminate the plan at the military command’s compound on Tuesday.

The residents, grouped under the South Sulawesi Coordinating Forum of State House Residents, said they rejected the invitation, adding that they would stay put in their houses until the day of eviction.

“The central government has issued a moratorium on the control of state-owned houses, meaning that the district military command cannot ask us to leave,” forum secretary Herman Tandek said Monday in Makassar as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Herman said they would not leave until the district command provided alternative accommodation for them. (swd/mtq)
