The West Tanjungjabung Health Agency in Jambi says the number of HIV/AIDS cases is continuing to rise, with three new cases detected in 2011.

Dwikora, an official with the agency, said on Tuesday that the three cases in 2011 were in addition to the 30 cases of people living with HIV/AIDS that had already been recorded since 2002.

He said the three new cases comprised one person who came from neighboring Riau province, another, a transvestite who lived in Tunkal Ilir district, and the third, who worked as a sex worker.

“These three people are now undergoing retroviral therapy to suppress the reproduction rate of the HIV,” Dwikora said.

According to Dwikora, the agency recorded 13 people living with HIV/AIDS between 2002 and 2008, but six new cases were discovered in 2008 alone, bringing the total to a record high.

“The number of people living with HIV/AIDS tended to increase after that, with the final figure standing at 33 in 2011,” he said.

He said in addition to the three people living with HIV/AIDS who were added to statistics in 2011, there were nine others who were being treated at a rehabilitation center. (mtq)
