Three people died as a result of falling trees in separate locations across Purbalingga, Central Java, which was struck by strong winds on Thursday morning.

Purbalingga spokesman Prayitno said that the body of the last victim, Sarwono, 55, was found in a forest on the slopes of Mt. Slamet.

No details were available on the identity of the other victims.

“We also received reports that five people were injured and are now being treated Purbalingga city hospital,” said Prayitno as quoted by tempo.co.

An officer with the Cilacap branch of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, Teguh Pudjiono, predicted that the strong winds coupled with high temperatures would linger until Jan. 29.

“The wind speed can reach an average of 60 kilometers per hour,” Teguh said.

He attributed the phenomenon to a low pressure centering in the Indian Ocean. (dmr)
