Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Linda Gumelar was picked up by a police helicopter on Friday after she became stuck on the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road, which was blocked by a workers’ demonstration.
“She was stuck there for quite some time,” Jakarta Police spokesman Comr. Sr. Rikwanto said as quoted by tempo.co.
The officer was talking while accompanying the minister, who was boarding a helicopter at the West Cikarang toll gate.
Thousands of workers staged a protest on Friday from 9 a.m. objecting to the ruling issued by the Bandung State Administrative Court granting the Bekasi chapter of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo)’s lawsuit aimed at revoking the 2012 minimum wage set by the local administration on Thursday.
At around 5 p.m., three Mobile Brigade police battalions were deployed at the center of the crowd, forcing protesters to disperse.
One of the workers’ coordinators, Nono, said they would stage an even larger protest on Tuesday should Apindo decide not to revoke its lawsuit against the minimum wage regulation. (iwa)
