Former Jakarta deputy governor Maj. Gen. (ret) Prijanto has denied speculation tying his recent resignation to preparations to announce his candidacy for the upcoming gubernatorial race.
“There are no political parties approaching me and vice versa. I also never looked for political support from any parties up to this point,” Prijanto said Sunday as quoted by tempo.co.
He also dismissed speculation that right now he was still pushing his luck to enter the race as an independent candidate, which would allow him to enter the ring without political party backing, just like running mates Faisal Basri and Biem Benyamin had done in the last months.
“So far, I am not interested in announcing my candidacy for the upcoming race. I was resigning solely because I felt that was the most honorable thing to do,” he said.
Prijanto’s name had been mentioned several times by Indonesian Democracy Party of Struggle (PDIP) secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo as among potential candidates the party tried to offer to the public as the party’s gubernatorial candidate.(dic)
