The Tangerang regency’s Balaraja General Hospital (RSUD), the Indonesian Eye Doctors Association (Perdami) and Bank Mandiri jointly organized free surgery for 41 disadvantaged cataract patients in Tangerang on Tuesday.
After receiving cataract surgery at the RSUD in
Balaraja district, the patients, hailing from 29 districts across the regency, said they had better vision.
“I don’t have money for eye surgery at hospital. When I
heard about this program, I immediately registered myself,” Zaini, a 46-year-old farmer who lives in Balaraja, told The Jakarta Post on Tuesday.
Program coordinator Rizaldi Pratama from Perdami said that Perdami recorded as many as 7 percent of Indonesians suffering from cataracts.
“Cataracts are not lethal but they can heavily disturb everyday activities. We hope that with the surgery, the patients can support themselves later on,” he added.(dic)
