President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says he perceives potential markups and fixed tenders in the country’s weaponry and defense equipment procurement projects.
"I ask you to end all kinds of illicit practices because I still feel that the temptation to commit such practices is still there," Yudhoyono told a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Office on Thursday.
"I know … you may feel uncomfortable because your incomes will reduce. But I have to tell you that anybody found to be involved in corruption will be harshly punished," he added.
At the meeting, the President also asked his ministers to remain transparent and open to the public over the government's plans to modernize its weaponry and defense equipment.
"Everyone must learn that we really need to upgrade our weaponry because ours is outdated compared to other countries. We need to strengthen our defensive power to defend our sovereignty," Yudhoyono said. (mtq)
