President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s youngest son and Democratic Party secretary general Edhie “Ibas” Baskoro Yudhoyono has expressed his concern following the naming of party fellow-member, Angelina Sondakh, a suspect in a high-profile graft case.
“I’m concerned about the naming of Ibu Angelina Sondakh a suspect. Another leading member of the Democratic Party has to undergo a legal process … We are being tested,” Ibas said in a press statement on Friday.
He said the party would continue to support law-enforcement agencies in upholding the law.
“We consistently support legal proceedings that are fair and in compliance with existing law. I hope the authorities will work professionally based on facts and evidence, without any outside interference,” said Ibas.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has named Angelina a suspect in the SEA Games bribery case, which has already put former Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin in the “hot seat”.
She is also banned from traveling abroad for the next year. A similar ban has also been imposed on Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) lawmaker Wayan Koster.
Both Angelina and Wayan are members of the House of Representatives’ budget committee, which approved the budget for the 2011 construction project of a SEA Games facility.
