JAKARTA: The Jakarta administration has recorded that a total of 204 trees were uprooted during January as heavy rain and strong winds increased during the peak of the rainy season.
City Parks and Cemetery Agency head Catharina Suryowati also reported that there were a total of 302 broken-branch incidents during the month.
“The uprooted tress will be replaced with new ones. We will also continue to trim trees across the capital to prevent more accidents,” she said on Friday.
The agency’s records show that there are a total of 4.5 million trees in Jakarta, of which at least 24,000 are prone to toppling.
Catharina admitted that the city had only been able to check and evaluate the structural strength and condition of around 80,000 trees.
