JAKARTA: The Jakarta Police have named the chairman of PT Dinamika Daya Andalan, Soenarno, a suspect in the embezzlement of Rp 2.5 billion (US$275,000) of land-dredging project funds.

Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Rikwanto said this new development was as a result of questioning former president Soeharto’s eldest grandson, Ari Haryo Wibowo Hardjojudanto, popularly known as Ari Sigit, chairman of the company’s board of commissioners.

“[Soenarno] is currently at large and we are trying to track him down,” Rikwanto told reporters on Thursday.

According to Rikwanto, the police have issued a summons for Soenarno, who was immediately named a suspect after he fled.

Ari, a witness in the case, was questioned by police in mid-January for his alleged involvement in the embezzlement case.

He was reported by steel producer PT Krakatau Wajatama to the Jakarta Police on Oct. 27. Krakatau Wajatama purportedly gave the money to Dinamika Daya Andalan as a down payment for a land-dredging project in Cilegon, Banten.

Problems arose in the project, which led two officials from Krakatau Wajatama, identified as Sutrisno and Mariati, to report Ari to the city’s police.

Krakatau Wajatama is a subsidiary of state-owned steel company PT Krakatau Steel.
