Letter: More job opportunities, please!

A- A A+

I refer to a news report titled “SBY: Labor wages should rise,” (The Jakarta Post Online, Feb. 1)

First of all, salary is based on skills, background education and experience.

Meanwhile, most workers only meet minimum requirements. Rises in salary levels automatically means that these labors should be given more challenging tasks.

The question is, will they be able to finish more challenging tasks, considering their lack of education and experience?

Another question is why we need to raise salaries while the GDP was stable for the past two years, and inflation has been kept to a pretty low level.

It is crucial for the President to create more job opportunities to combat unemployment, with free education perhaps, and to underline demonstrations need be conducted peacefully and orderly in order to avoid jeopardizing economic activity.

The statement from the President may be just good enough if it stays away from politics: but, how about Bekasi mayor?

Is there any election coming soon? Perhaps there still politics behind it.

There have been a lot of troubles in Bekasi recently — maybe the Bekasi mayor needs to be investigated.

If these upheavals keep happening, the country’s economic reputation may be damaged, causing foreign investors to look to neighboring countries as destinations for their investments.
